Frugal Friday: Checking Receipts (or "The Day Publix Gave Me Free Diapers!")
For Frugal Friday at Biblical Womanhood, my idea is to make sure you check your receipts, especially if you shop at Publix.
I'm sure we've all glanced at a receipt and realized that something wasn't quite right (if not caught it as it was ringing up). However, if you shop at Publix, this is a must do because of their "Publix Checkout Promise". At Publix, if any item rings up as more than the correct shelf price of that item, you receive that item for FREE.
I was unaware of this policy until recently, when God provided an entire month's worth of free diapers via the Publix Checkout Promise! Here's what happened:
The extra large-jumbo-mega-huge boxes of Pampers Diapers were on sale at Publix for $5 off, which was good because they are normally priced at $35 each (obviously, this is before I started shopping at CVS!). As I was driving home from the store (at 9pm!), I realized that the diapers had rung up full-price. Back to the store I went, and kindly asked the cashier at the service desk about the price (I was just hoping to get $5 back).
After we had checked that out, she said "Well it looks like you are getting free diapers today!", and explained the Publix policy to me. I was shocked, to say the least!
This is reason 75,001 that I love Publix (more to be listed later!) :)
So check those receipts y'all!

Good for you! I'm glad you went back!
I'm checking out your website before I do my grocery shopping today and here I noticed that you said you buy your diapers at CVS. Looking them up on the web site, it appears that their diapers (looking at a 6 pack of 26 diapers each, size 5) are about $.42 cents a piece. The Wal-Mart generic brand (parents choice) is about 10 cents cheaper per diaper. Is there a reason you buy them at CVS instead? Do you not do Wal-Mart or is there something that makes them cheaper than advertised or....? Wondering if I'm missing a good deal somewhere...
Kelly,
Buying diapers at CVS definitely is NOT cheaper unless they're on sale and you're using the ECB program. You're right, Walmart IS cheaper than regular price CVS diapers (and than most other diapers, I've found).
But, when I make money at CVS (for instance, buying the Alavert from this week for $2.99 on sale/with a coupon and then earning $4 ECBs, I then pay for diapers with the ECB's I earn (instead of using real money).
For instance, a couple of weeks ago, CVS had their diapers BOGO, so I bought 2 40 packs of diapers for $8.99, which works out to $.11/diaper. Woohoo! Plus, I paid in ECB's, so I wasn't out any cash. I'm posting about how CVS has helped our diaper stockpile in the next couple of days, so please check back.
Does this help?
Thank you so much for reading, and commenting! :)
My bad, I just went shopping and Wal-Mart is actually about $.17 per diaper. I was looking at the wrong bag when I figured up the first price.
I got ya. I'm not really up on the ECB business. Guess I'll have to figure out what that's about!
Kelly,
$.17/diaper is pretty inexpensive!
I forgot to add that CVS also does deals with brands like Pampers, Huggies, etc, where you can buy $25 of diapers, get $10 ECB's, etc. This can be a great deal IF you have manufacturer coupons (and/or CVS coupons!), and you can get the diapers for almost free....
I'll post about these diaper deals the next time one comes up! :)
In regards to the publix checkout promise. I bought this week 2 Aunt Jemima Breakfast (frozen). The price is 5/$5. It rang $1.79 each. So i went today back to double check and to let them know. The lady game me money back only for the difference which was 0.79X2. So I asked her about the policy that if you purchase something and the price you paid for is higher than the price is suppose to be you get it for free. She said yes that is TRUE, BUT I ONLY GET CREDIT FOR ONE. NOT FOR BOTH. THEN I TALKED TO THE MANAGER WHICH SHOWED ME PRINTED ON THE WALL WAS A POSTER THAT SAID THAT.
Thought you might want it to know.
I still love publix and thanks again for your hard work.

Is this policy still in effect? I had never heard it before and was just in there for a reimbursement from a miscalculation today. A Publix trainer helped me. She was very nice, and gave me the reimbursement, but never mentioned this policy and getting it for free.
Even though this is an older post, I am so glad that I came across it when I did. After reading this blog just the other day, I was more aware at the grocery store (Publix) as our items were being scanned. My husband and I try to take advantage of the bonus buys as well as coupons in order to save money at the grocery store. Today we were buying toothpaste (Colgate Total 5.8oz tube) 2 for $5 and used a coupon for $1.00 off. We thought a pretty good deal to get each tube for $2. As I was watching the prices, I noticed that the toothpaste did not ring up correctly. Each tube rang up for $3.95 and not the $2.50 per tube. I immediately told the cashier who sent the bagger to check. I knew it was possible that the item was possibly placed in the wrong spot on the shelf (The 2 for $5.00 was on the 4oz tubes) I in fact was correct but since it was not our mistake we were able to get one tube of toothpaste for $2.50 and the other for free (Publix Checkout Policy) With our $1.00 off coupon, we were able to get both tubes of toothpaste for $1.50 or $0.75 per tube.
Thank you for letting me know about the Publix Checkout Policy. It is not one that is well advertised but I was able to take advantage of it today due to this blog.
Eileen,
You are so welcome! I am so glad that Publix honored their Checkout Promise for you.
Thank you for commenting, and for reading!
